Indonesia Inflation Hits Highest Level in 20 Months Amid Flood Impacts

Inflation in Indonesia climbed to its highest level in around 20 months in December, as price pressures accelerated following floods that hit Sumatra and disrupted food supplies.

Data from Statistics Indonesia showed that inflation in Indonesia rose to 2.92% year on year, exceeding analysts’ expectations of 2.8%.

Impact on Affected Regions

The provinces of Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra recorded the highest inflation rates nationwide after being severely affected by heavy rains and a rare cyclone that damaged agricultural output.

Monetary Policy Pressure

Persistent price pressures may complicate efforts by the central bank to cut interest rates, as it aims to keep inflation within a 1.5%–3.5% target range.

Damage to rice, palm oil, fruits, and vegetable farms is expected to keep inflation in Indonesia elevated in the coming months.
